Breaking Free From The Stories That Hold You Back

Have you ever caught yourself saying, “I’ll start next week” or “It’s just not the right time” when it comes to making a change in your health? Perhaps you’ve read the books, made the plan, even bought the new food—but days or weeks later, nothing has shifted. You’re still in the same place, waiting for the perfect moment.

If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something important: you are not lazy. You are not unmotivated. And you are certainly not alone. This is one of the most universal human struggles—the difficulty of getting started.

 


 

Why We Put Things Off

Procrastination has less to do with willpower and more to do with survival. Our brains evolved to keep us safe. Thousands of years ago, change meant risk—eating new food could mean poisoning, venturing away from the tribe could mean danger. So our brains learned to resist change, to cling to what’s familiar.

Fast forward to today, and those protective instincts still whisper in our ear:

  • I don’t have time.

  • I’ll start after this busy patch.

  • What if I fail again?

  • I’m too old now.

They feel like truths, but they are not. They’re simply stories our brains tell us to avoid discomfort. They once kept us safe—now they keep us stuck.

 


 

The Common Stories I Hear Everyday

In my clinic, I see the same patterns again and again.

  • “I don’t have time.”
    Between work, family, and endless to-do lists, carving out space for your health feels impossible. But here’s the reality: even half an hour a week, set aside for you, can spark change that ripples through every part of your life. It doesn’t mean hours in the kitchen or gourmet meals. It’s about simple, quick strategies that make health realistic in a busy world.

  • “I can’t afford it.”
    Healthy food, support, and coaching do cost money. But think about the true cost of
    not investing in your health: years of medication, lost energy, reduced independence, and missed moments with loved ones. I’ve watched people who once hesitated to invest go on to reclaim their health and their joy. The truth is, your health isn’t an expense—it’s the foundation of everything else.

  • “I don’t have the willpower.”
    This is perhaps the most disheartening story, and I wish I could erase it for everyone. You do not lack willpower. What you lack is the right approach. Diets that rely on restriction and self-control are designed to fail—they put you in battle with your own biology. But when you learn to work
    with your body and brain, everything shifts. I’ve seen people who believed they had no discipline achieve remarkable, lasting change once they stopped blaming themselves and started using strategies that actually fit their lives.
     
     
  • “It’s too late for me.”
    Nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve witnessed people in their sixties, seventies, even eighties reverse diabetes, come off medication, lose weight, and regain confidence. Your body has an extraordinary ability to heal, no matter your age. It is never too late to start.
     

 


 

Choosing A New Story

The real obstacle isn’t a lack of time, money, or willpower—it’s the stories we tell ourselves. They feel protective, but they’re walls built around our comfort zone. Once you see them as stories, not facts, you can begin to rewrite them.

Every transformation I’ve seen started with the same fears. But the difference was this: instead of waiting for the “perfect moment”, people chose to begin, imperfectly, one step at a time. That first step doesn’t need to be grand. It just needs to be yours.

Imagine if you gave yourself permission to start today—not because you’re certain of success, but because you deserve the chance to try. Imagine if you stopped listening to the voice that says, “not yet”, and started following the one that whispers, “I want something better for myself.”

That’s how change begins.
