Why Weight Loss Feels Harder After 50 – And How to Finally Take Back Control

Sep 06, 2025

Have you ever stepped on the scales, felt defeated, and wondered why nothing seems to work anymore? Perhaps you’ve spent years cutting calories, following exercise regimes, or hopping from one diet trend to another, only to find that the weight won’t shift. Maybe you’ve even started to ask yourself, “Is it even worth trying anymore? Is it too late for me?”

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Over the years, I’ve spoken to hundreds of people—many of them women over 50—who share these exact struggles. And I want you to know this: it’s not your fault.

As a GP and founder of The Lifestyle Clinic, I’ve spent years helping people navigate weight loss, type 2 diabetes, and overall health challenges. I’ve seen first-hand how outdated advice has left people feeling stuck and frustrated. But the truth is, your body has changed, and your approach needs to change too.

Let’s break down the four most common hurdles I see with weight loss in people over 50 and explore why you can overcome them.

1. Post-Menopause Weight Gain – When the Old Rules Don’t Apply

For many women, post-menopause weight gain feels as though it arrives overnight. You might be eating the same as before—or even less—but still find yourself gaining weight, especially around your middle.

Hormonal shifts, slower metabolism, and reduced muscle mass all change the way your body stores fat and processes energy. On top of this, your body becomes more sensitive to insulin and stress hormones, making it harder to lose weight using the old “eat less, move more” advice.

This isn’t about a lack of discipline or effort. It’s simply biology. Counting calories may have worked for you in your 30s or 40s, but by 50, those rules no longer apply. What’s needed is an approach that focuses on insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation, not punishing diets or over-exercising.

At The Lifestyle Clinic, I teach clients to focus on the bigger picture: meal structure, food quality, sleep, stress management, and daily routines. These targeted changes often lead to incredible results, like women losing 8–10kg in a matter of weeks—not by starving themselves, but by working with their biology.

2. The Myth of Exercise as the Main Solution

Exercise is often seen as the key to weight loss, and while it’s brilliant for your heart, bones, mood, and brain, it’s not the golden ticket for fat loss that we’ve been led to believe. In fact, official government guidelines on exercise list countless health benefits, but weight loss isn’t one of them.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t move. Far from it! Exercise is excellent for preventing weight regain, boosting energy, and improving overall health. But if joint pain, fatigue, or a busy lifestyle are holding you back, you shouldn’t feel like you’re failing.

Weight loss starts with nutrition, insulin sensitivity, and stress reduction. Once your energy improves, movement becomes easier and more enjoyable. Many of my clients are amazed to find that when they change their food and lifestyle habits first, their desire and ability to exercise naturally increases.

3. “Diets Don’t Work for Me”

So many of the people I see have been on a diet for most of their adult lives. They’ve lost weight, gained it back, and tried again. This endless cycle leaves them feeling like they’ve failed—but really, it’s the diets that have failed them.

Here’s why: your brain is wired for survival, not weight loss. When you drop weight quickly, your brain sees it as a threat, slowing your metabolism and increasing hunger signals to bring your weight back up. Strict diets rely on willpower, but biology always wins.

The key to long-term results isn’t another “quick fix” diet but understanding how your brain and body respond to change. By learning mindset skills, recognizing triggers for old habits, and creating an environment that supports success, you can finally stop battling yourself and start building a lifestyle that lasts.

4. “It’s Too Late for Me” – The Biggest Barrier of All

Perhaps the most heart-breaking belief I encounter is this: I’ve missed my chance. I’m too old. Change is too hard.”

But nothing could be further from the truth. I’ve worked with people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s who have reversed type 2 diabetes, reduced medication, lost significant weight, and rediscovered their energy and confidence.

Your body is always capable of change. It wants to heal. The only real barrier is the belief that it’s not possible.

A Different Approach to Health and Weight Loss

Since founding The Lifestyle Clinic in 2018, I’ve seen countless clients achieve results they once thought impossible:

  • One in three people reverse their type 2 diabetes.

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol levels drop naturally.

  • Joint pain eases, energy improves, and brain fog lifts.

  • Many reduce or even come off medications, including insulin.

These are not just numbers; they’re real people with real lives who decided to stop blaming themselves and start working with their bodies, not against them.

If you’re tired of feeling stuck and frustrated, it’s time for a new approach—one that empowers you, rather than punishes you.
